When XSEDE, NSF’s national cyberinfrastructure from 2011 to 2021, was first established, it subscribed to the then-new Globus data transfer service to provide a universal data fabric spanning XSEDE resource providers. This collaboration played a vital role in bootstrapping the Globus service and also allowed Globus to meet expanding XSEDE needs for data services over the following decade, as evidenced by the 16.7 PB transferred to or from XSEDE resources by more than 1,300 researchers in 2021 alone.

After careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue the data publication functions of the Globus service. This action only affects data publication functions—it does not affect core Globus services, such as file transfer, data sharing, and the management console, in any way.

We first announced this decision in February 2019 to customers affected by the decision, and we have worked with them to transition their data and metadata to other systems, prior to our discontinuing the service on September 30, 2019.

I’m excited to announce that Globus services can now be used to manage protected data, including data regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Globus hosted a live webinar about the GCS5 release on June 7, 2018. To view the recorded session, click here. To access the slides, click here.

As we announced last week at GlobusWorld, the hosted CLI (legacy CLI) is currently deprecated and support for it will be discontinued on August 1, 2018. The hosted CLI has been replaced by the native CLI application (https://docs.globus.org/cli/) which has been available in production since April 2017.

As we recently announced, we are working towards making Globus suitable for use with protected data and in HIPAA regulated environments. In preparation for this—and to support new features in Globus Connect Server version 5—the Globus service will undergo an upgrade on Saturday, December 9th, and will be unavailable from 10:00AM to 2:00PM CST.

We recently announced availability of Globus for Google Drive, adding another storage system that can be used with the Globus service. Globus for Google Drive was driven by customer demand to make Google Drive more effective as a storage tier suitable for researchers on campus. Common use cases include using Google Drive as a backup destination for research data, as intermediate storage for computation results, as a highly accessible repository to support Data Management Plans, and as a conduit for securely distributing derived data to users of a science gateway.

In December 2016, we announced the deprecation of OAuth 2.0 service provided by Globus Nexus (also known as GOAuth), and since then we have worked with several user groups to transition to Globus Auth for authentication. We will be discontinuing the Nexus OAuth 2.0 service on August 7, 2017 -- use of Nexus OAuth will not be supported after that date.
