September 7 – 11, 2019 (All Day)
Globus is proud to be presenting at this year's International Computing in the Atmospheric Sciences Symposium (iCAS) in Italy:
- Title: E3SM Data Management and Publication
- Date/Time: Thursday, September 12 @ 9:30-10:00 a.m.
- Abstract: The Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Project is an ongoing, state-of-the-science Earth system modeling, simulation, and prediction project that addresses the grand challenge of actionable predictions of Earth system variability and change, with an emphasis on the most critical scientific questions facing the United States and its Department of Energy (DOE). This presentation will cover E3SM's data management goals and infrastructure, and its use of cloud or other externally hosted services to improve the focus of E3SM-funded staff on project deliverables. The publication of major simulation results to the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) in support of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) is one of the primary goals that will be presented. During Phase I, E3SM developed the first version (v1) of its model, featuring a unique capability of regional refinement in all of its component models for multi-resolution modeling. Several Diagnostic, Evaluation and Characterization of Klima (DECK) simulations from v1 have already been published. Preparing the second version E3SM simulations for publication to ESGF requires significant post-processing to transform the data into the format required by CMIP6, including standardizing the NetCDF files produced by the model from all the components by making them Climate Forecast (CF) compliant and integrating it with CMOR (Climate Model Output Rewriter) to automatically rewrite the data in the CMIP compliant format. This post-processing pipeline and E3SM's model publication plan and status will be covered.
The iCAS2019 Symposium is the 14th biennial meeting in a series hosted by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which is sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation. iCAS2019 will be held September 8-12, 2019, in a new location — Grand Hotel Bristol in Stresa, Italy.
