Globus Online Offers Provider Plans for Sustainability

Enhanced data management capabilities available to research computing centers on a subscription basis.

Chicago, ILOctober 31, 2013 — Globus Online announces today the availability of Provider Plans that enable computing centers at non-profit institutions to deliver powerful and scalable data management capabilities to researchers, backed by enhanced levels of operational support.

The new Provider Plans will cater to the specific demands of HPC resource owners—such as campus research computing centers, scientific laboratories, and national supercomputing facilities—to further integrate Globus Online as a critical service for their users.

Sometimes described as a “dropbox for science”, Globus Online is widely used by resource owners and administrators to offer secure, reliable file transfer and data sharing services to researchers. The plans will enable providers to deliver these services to more users, while optimizing resource utilization and reducing operational support costs. Provider Plans will offer a set of advanced administration tools and extended support options with guaranteed response times.

Provider Plans include the following key features:

  • Endpoints that enable all researchers at the facility to share data with collaborators, without requiring additional cloud storage
  • An integrated user experience using a branded web site and an alternate identity provider such as a campus login service
  • Operations management tools such as usage reports and a monitoring console

Plans are offered as an annual subscription, with prices based on the size of the installation, and the management capabilities required. Globus Online is a non-profit initiative, and designed the Provider Plans as a first step towards becoming a sustainable service provider to non-profit research institutions.

The Provider Plans are one of the major announcements at this week’s GlobusWORLD, the annual conference of the Globus community. Early adopters of Globus Online Provider Plans, such as the University of Exeter, are among the attendees at this year’s event, which includes high performance computing resource managers from non-profit research institutions around the world.
