Globus Announces Support for Amazon S3 Glacier Storage Classes
November 04, 2025 | Susan Tussy
We are excited to announce that Globus now fully supports Amazon S3 Glacier storage classes. The addition of AWS Glacier support means researchers can unify their entire data lifecycle—from collection and analysis to sharing and archival—within the trusted Globus environment. No longer do teams need to juggle multiple tools or workflows: the reliable Globus transfer engine and tightly integrated connectors minimize administrative overhead and empower users to focus on impactful research, knowing their invaluable data is securely managed and readily accessible for retrieval when needed.
The Globus AWS S3 premium connector can now transparently restore archived S3 objects. When a request is made to download data from S3, Globus will check the storage class before downloading. If the object is in a Glacier storage class or an archive tier of Intelligent Tiering, Globus will automatically issue a restore request, monitor the status of the restore request, and then download the object when ready. In addition, Globus now supports configuring the desired storage class when uploading data to S3.
With support for S3 Glacier, Globus continues its mission to expand storage access for researchers, providing seamless connectivity to archival storage within existing data ecosystems and workflows—whether on-premises, cloud-based, or hybrid. Users can manage data in S3 Glacier using a familiar, unified interface, automating transfers and retrievals for datasets at all scales. These new capabilities also facilitate compliance and security, as S3 Glacier is designed to offer unmatched data durability and comprehensive security features.
Globus support for S3 Glacier comes at a critical time, as more institutions are seeking efficient ways to preserve, access, and share vast research datasets. By supporting additional S3 storage classes, Globus reaffirms its commitment to providing leading-edge solutions for the scientific community.
